Hannover was hosting trade fairs and exhibitions as long ago as 1947, and in 2000 was the setting for the EXPO World Exposition. Lower Saxony's regional capital is also heavily influenced by service industry, with 74 per cent of the population working in the tertiary sector. Autostadt, Wolfsburg: Home of the VW, it invites visitors to a journey into the world of mobility. Twenty five hectares of rolling hills and lakes, together with extraordinary architecture and design, form the background to the numerous multi-facetted Autostadt attractions.

Evening at Petersberg, Erfurt: The Petersberg Regiment salutes guests on their arrival. At the fortress bakehouse, the master baker awaits guests with freshly baked bread, and, introduces them to the art of breadmaking. There is an opportunity to savour the bread and a variety of typical Thuringian specialities along with some strong dark beer. Music from lute and string drum sets the tone and creates a great atmosphere. When it gets late, brave souls can take a tour of the mysterious passageways beneath the fortress and try the special ‘bat’s drink’.
